Fort the Love of Our Mothers

My husband and I have been living in Fort Wayne for just about 3 years, and I love it more and more all the time.

So I've decided to start this new blog series to spread a little bit of the Fort Love. Twice a month, I'll be posting about the town I live in... the town I love... the one and only Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Mother's Day is one of those holidays that tends to sneak up on me each May. The weather is getting warmer, and it's all about me and what I'm going to do each weekend.

So if you're anything like me, and need a little Mother's Day inspiration, check out my list of Mother's Day activities below. And remember... you're never too old to take Mom out for the day!

Mother's Day in the Garden

If your mom is into plants, flowers, and balmy temperatures, then the Botanical Conservatory is the perfect place to take her for Mother's Day. Visit their Butterflies of Malaysia exhibit, and pot your own special Mother's Day plant for her to take with her.

Laboring for Mothers

Moms of all kind need our support and encouragement. Laboring for Mothers is a week-long effort for individuals and area businesses to use their resources (time, money, vehicles, tools) to help out mothers, single moms, foster moms, grandmothers, etc. with their day-to-day chores. It could be as simple as helping them with laundry, or going to the grocery store for them!

There will be a commencement and dinner celebration on the 13th with guest speakers, entertainment, dinner, and dessert!

If Mom's the gardening type, take her over to the McMillen Ice Arena all Mother's Day weekend to pick out some new plants. They're offering over 600 types of plants, including herbs, tomatoes, vegetable plants, annual and perennial flowers, foliage plants, tropical plants, and more! If you visit on Saturday, you'll be able to take advantage of the special guest speakers and DIY displays to help out those moms who lack the green thumb. Best of all, proceeds benefit public programs at the Botanical Conservatory.

While it's not exactly being touted as a Mother's Day event, the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo "Sleep with the Sharks" would be perfect for a young family, looking for a new and adventurous way to spend their Mother's Day. This overnight experience gives kids over the age of 5 and their accompanying adult a chance to see how the Zoo operates after dark, and spend the night underneath the shark tank.
